Groundbreaking: Gene-Edited Pig Organs Successfully Transplanted into Humans

Organ transplantation is a crucial treatment for many patients with end-stage organ failure. In China, there are over 300,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list, yet only about 16,000 organs are available annually. To address this global challenge, scientists have been exploring the use of gene-editing technology to modify pig organs for human transplantation.

In March, Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States announced the first successful transplantation of a pig kidney into a living patient. The kidney - donating pig was genetically edited using CRISPR - Cas9 technology. Harmful pig genes were removed, certain human genes were added, and porcine endogenous retroviruses were inactivated to enhance compatibility with human recipients and reduce the risk of human infection with pig viruses. The recipient initially recovered well, but passed away nearly two months after the operation. Doctors believe that "there is no indication" that the death was a result of the transplantation.

This breakthrough in the field of organ transplantation offers new hope for countless patients in need. With continuous research and development, gene - edited pig organs may one day become a reliable and widely - available source of organs, alleviating the severe shortage of human organs for transplantation. However, further studies are still needed to ensure long - term safety and effectiveness.
